Dreaming of Dark Shadows

You may or may not know that Dark Shadows, the film starring Johnny Depp is coming out May 11.  I'm so excited about this one.  My mom was absolutely hooked on this "vampire meets 1970's soap opera."  How can it get any better when my boyfriend Johnny Depp is going to play the famed Barnabas Collins?  Here's some trivia to get you excited for the film along with a clip.  Enjoy!

--This is Tim Burton's eighth film with Johnny Depp, his seventh film with Helena Bonham Carter, his fifth film with Christopher Lee, and his second film with Michelle Pfeiffer(Pfeffer had starred in Batman Returns twenty years previously).

--Anne Hathaway, Lindsay Lohan and Jennifer Lawrence auditioned for the role of Angelique.

--Kathryn Leigh Scott reported at the Dark Shadows Festival in Brooklyn (August 19-21, 2011) that she, Lara Parker, David Selby and Jonathan Frid were treated "like royalty" when they arrived on set for their cameos during the first week of July 2011, and thatJohnny Depp walked up to Jonathan Frid and said, "None of this would be possible had it not been for you" referring to Frid's original portrayal of the Barnabas Collins role and its impact on the success of the original series.

--To prepare for his role as Barnabas Collins, Johnny Depp undertook a weight-loss regime and a diet of green tea and low-sugar fruit, getting his weight down to 140 pounds.

--Eva Green described her role of Angelique as "Bette Davis and Janis Joplin mixed together."

The Fashionable Elite

Sometimes I don't understand why celebrities get invited to certain events.  The White House Correspondents' Association Dinner is definitely one of these events.  The dinner is attended by the president and the first lady, government officials, members of the press corps, and of course Hollywood celebrities.  The event was held at the Hilton Hotel in Washington D.C.  Although I don't think people like Lindsay Lohan has any business being there, the fashion was fabulous.  Who wore your favorite look?

Here Comes the Sun

Good morning!  It's a gorgeous day in sunny Southern California and I'm excited to get my tan on.  There's nothing better than relaxing by the pool with a good book and some iced tea.  Every girl knows there's a routine to laying out that requires some good products and a huge hat.  Here are some of my essentials:

The first thing that's a must have is a big floppy hat.  The older I get the more concerned I am about getting sun on my face, so get a fun one that looks chic and does the job.  The black and straw hat above from Nordstrom is perfect.

Next, you need some protection for your face.  Have you heard of B.B. creams?  They're the newest thing. Garnier makes a great version.  It's a moisturizer, brightener, foundation all in one.  I love this stuff and it gives you a little coverage so you don't feel completely makeup free, while protecting your skin at the same time.  It's really reasonable too.

Now that we've got the face covered, let's move on to the body.  My parents took us to Hawaii every year for vacation and I instantly got hooked on the Australian Gold products.  Not too many places on the mainland used to carry it.  The smell is heavenly and of course reminds me of those vacations.  It comes in different levels of SPF but I prefer an 8 so I get a little color.  The best part about this one is it's a spray gel with bronzer, so you look instantly tan while you're working on your real color.

This product is sold out all the time, which tells you it must be good.  Baby Lips by Maybelline is the perfect way to gloss your lips while protecting them at the same time.  Everyone I know swears by this product and collects them in every color.

How cute is this towel?  Perfect for us bloggers for sure.  There are a ton of cute towels and they're very reasonable in price at Target.

So what's left?  Get yourself a great magazine, book, glass of iced tea, and of course your iPod and you're good to go for the perfect day in the sun!

Fashion Friday Tribeca Film Festival

(Camilla Belle in Prada)

I'm so glad it's almost Friday.  This week has been a little tough for me, just one of those weeks.  But, Fashion Friday is here!  The Tribeca Film Festival is the place to be seen in New York.  Actor Robert DeNiro founded the festival in 2003 in an effort to bring back some morale after 9/11.  The fashions are amazing of course, and I couldn't resist featuring them with that fabulous rose background!

"Gatsby? What Gatsby?"

If you follow me on Instagram you probably saw my photo of my copy of The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald.  It is my favorite book of all time.  I feel so lucky that I get to teach it each year and dread the day I can't.  The novel is a romantic reminder of what true love can be, and what it actually ends up being.  For me, Jay Gatsby represents everything I want in a man...someone who loves me unconditionally is willing to do anything for me.  Is that reality?  Maybe...but the idea of a man being in love with you for his entire life is dreamy.

My 11th graders probably don't understand my passion for this great work of art.  If you've never read it, please do yourself a favor and read it right away!  You will be sucked in and fall in love more so than something you might have read, like Hunger Games or Twilight.  This is the true classic.

"He smiled understandingly--much more than understandingly.  It was one of those rare smiles with a quality of eternal reassurance in it, that you may come across four or five times in life.  It faced--or seemed to face the whole external world for an instant, and then concentrated on you with an irresistible prejudice in your favor.  It understood you just as far as you wanted to be understood, believed in you as you would like to believe in yourself." --Nick Carraway The Great Gatsby Chapter 3

Now do you see why I'm so in love?  Who writes like that?

What's really exciting is Baz Luhrmann is working on a new version of the film that stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Carey Mulligan.  Yay!!!  In the meantime, here's some fun trivia from the 1974 version starring Robert Redford and Mia Farrow.  If you haven't seen it, trust me...rent it this weekend.  Robert Redford is an angel.

--Originally, Truman Capote was the screenwriter, and his draft included making Nick a homosexual and Jordan Baker a vindictive lesbian. Capote was fired, and Francis Ford Coppola finished his draft in three weeks.

--Mia Farrow was pregnant during filming and the director filmed around that by including close up shots of Farrow, and having her wear a lot of flowing costumes.

--The rights for the novel were purchased by producer Robert Evans in 1971 so that his wife at the time, Ali MacGraw, could play the part of Daisy. A shooting script wasn't ready yet, and MacGraw agreed to star in The Getaway as filler. During the production of The Getaway MacGraw fell in love with co-star Steve McQueen and left Evans for him. Mia Farrow was then picked to play Daisy.

--Many of the male extras in the party scenes were recruited from the Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island because military officers already wore the clean-cut hairstyles that were worn by men in the period of the film.

--According to Robert Evans in his memoirs Warren Beatty was approached to play Gatsby but wanted to direct the film and suggested Evans play the role himself. Jack Nicholson was offered but rejected the role because he didn't believe Ali MacGraw to be appropriate casting for Daisy (she was later replaced with Mia Farrow) and Steve McQueen was also considered and rejected for the role.

--Supposedly Natalie Wood was an early contender for the role of Daisy but she allegedly became furious when the producers insisted on a screen test since the actress hadn't been in a movie for over 5 years. She balked and negotiations ended.

--Mia Farrow writes that the main reason she was unable to create on-screen chemistry with co-star Robert Redford was because of Redford's total absorption in the Watergate scandals that were rocking Washington, D.C. at the time of filming. Farrow says Redford spent all his free time locked in his trailer, watching the political scandal unfold on television.

And here are some photos of the upcoming film with Leo:

A Taste of Lavender

Wedding season is upon us and I can't wait to see what the brides do with the summer ceremonies.  The colors are always gorgeous.  One of my favorites is anything in the purple family, especially lavender.  It looks great with a tan, and accentuates the true beauty of any room with the dramatic.  Here's some of the lavender images I'm in love with...thoughts?
